Museum ‘The Avenue’

Museum ‘The Avenue’ seeks to provide a lively cultural platform with extended green spaces for local residents and visitors, as well as well harmonized museum & learning center. The experience of spatially interconnected programs; exhibitions, roof park, research, and community activities will spark the cultural diversity and creativity to keep the museum sustainable.

Extended Park The green space is extended from Songdo Central Park to the museum as a ‘Plaza’ and ‘roof park’ that accommodates various sized outdoor events, that enrich the cultural identity of the museum.

Exhibition & Learning 3 pieces of exhibition zones are laid underneath the sloped roof surface, which lets you out onto the roof park from exhibition spaces II & III through the valleys. And this intimate relationship between main exhibition spaces and external exhibition spaces on the roof park will boost people’s casual visits which then can be emerged further. Learning & research centre is independently accessible from the North Entrance and open to an education exhibition space.

The Avenue & The Valleys Accessed from the main entrance of the museum, the 7.8m wide, 20m high avenue leads visitors into 1st floor Exhibition I, 2nd floor Exhibition, 3rd floor Exhibition, and the viewing balcony at the north end. It also links to two Valleys at 1.5 floor and 2.5 floor level, which breaks the whole volume of the museum into 3 pieces and allows interaction between different programs, hence Exhibition and Learning are separated yet interconnected.

Roof Park

The green space is extended from Songdo Central park to the museum. Outdoor space of National Museum of World Writing has two distinct materials; grass and stone paving. The grass is extended from the central park to the ‘Plaza’ and onto the ‘roof park’ that creates some dissolving pattern, while allowing hard pavement for emergency access mainly along the perimeter of the site. Benches and fin walls divide the space accommodating various sized outdoor events, that enrich the cultural identity of the museum.

Walking through the Avenue

The Avenue, lightly covered by glass joints sloped mass of exhibition spaces and the rigid box of supporting spaces. Accessed from the main entrance of the museum, the Avenue leads visitors from permanent exhibition spaces to temporary exhibition spaces with open view to roof garden and sky and it ends at the viewing balcony on 3rd floor level with a great view towards canal, lake and Songdo city. The 7.8m wide avenue has slope of 1/8, with 5 cores and 18 exposed columns laid rhythmically throughout its 150m length, which lets you in all part of exhibition spaces under casual, light atmosphere with nature.
